Totem is a new body of mixed-media works by artist Christopher Kier.
Included in this exhibition are Kier's encaustic wax paintings on canvas and mylar as well as found object sculptures, expanding on the concept of the traditional indigenous totem. The Canadian artist has been perfecting the ancient art of encaustic painting, a process which involves combining hot wax with raw pigment, which Chris uses to create luscious texture and vivid color palettes. He brushes the tinted wax in repeated layers, building up rich surfaces which imply a sculptural presence.
In this new body of work, Kier explores architectural motifs, urban detritus, and natural elements and mediums, creating new dialogue around the word totem and exploring how distinctive shapes and symbols speak to both artist and viewer.
