HEDGE Gallery is thrilled to present a dual exhibition featuring two powerful and intersecting bodies of work that explore the terrain of memory, identity, and the radical act of aging. Combining A Library of Selves and I Am An Old Woman Playlist, this two women exhibition offers an evocative look at the artists’ evolution through self-portraiture by Rebecca Cross and print based media collage by Liz Maugans.

A Library of Selves is framed not as a simple collection of portraits, but as a chronological compendium—markers of progression over time. In these works, dyed silk fabrics are adhered to wooden boards, serving as a ground for figures that emerge through an improvisatory process. Drawing on the Japanese philosophy of wabi sabi, Rebbecca Cross embraces imperfections and weathering as central to the medium. These faces, which the artist refers to as "The Furies" and later as "Goddesses," capture various psychic and emotional states. The work asks a central question: "Is it radical to paint a portrait by an old woman of her many selves?"

Complementing this exploration is I Am An Old Woman Playlist, a body of work rooted in the musical and emotional residue of a life lived. Through layered print media collages, Liz Maugans utilizes fragments of past work—some dating back to her college years—to build new compositions reflecting the complexities of midlife. This series serves as both a declaration and a disruption, pushing against the social invisibility assigned to women as they age. It centers resilience, authority, and the emotional dualities of caregiving, grief, and reinvention.

Together, these exhibitions move memory from the ephemeral into the haptic. By integrating materials such as screenprinting, monoprinting, paint, and hand-dyed textiles, the two artists develop a visual vocabulary that explores what remains when life’s great loves and griefs accumulate. The resulting work is a generative, honest, and radically expressive testament to the enduring power of the female spirit.
