In the upper righthand corner of the painting, Curry paints Antonio Ruggieri’s Jael and Sisera (1640). The painting depicts the moment right before the bloody murder of Sisera at the hands of Jael. Jael kills the general by first inviting him to her tent, serving him milk, and then driving a tent peg through his temple. This story fills a prophetic declaration, overturning both gender and cultural norms, as she commits murder for the sake of her tribe.
