As an artist, I primarily use woodcut to create layered prints and installations that evoke intimate, magical moments within the hidden landscapes of our environment.  Woodcut is incredibly physical and energetic, but also requires a level of intimacy and care in carving each mark. There is a level of trust that must be achieved with the material and in oneself. Carving and printing are completely cathartic acts that require the full presence of self. I think of my reduction woodcuts almost like watercolor, printing translucent layers of color that mix on the paper. The marks and colors interact in delicate ways. The resulting work is physical, subtle, and bold.  

Each one of my series of works chronicles a relationship, either with a person, place, or specific time of my life. I find that I remember things in landscapes, like playing in the ocean as a child, watching the light dance along the waves, or sitting among the piles of fabric and yarn as my mother sewed quilts. Lately, I have been including figures in my work to show the human presence in these places.

With this new body of work, I wanted to focus on how light activates seemingly mundane spaces into sites full of enchantment. These large reduction woodcuts focus on entryways, exits, and back alleys, places that people pass through but don’t necessarily linger in during the day. However, at night they are lit with spotlights, bonfires, or residual indoor light, creating surreal effects with shadows and color that enhance our awareness of our mind, body, and existence.
